Relocating Soon? Use These Tips to Reduce Costs, Save Time and Remove Stress

Published on Feb 26, 2018 in Andrews Blog: Residential & Corporate Moving Services, Residential Moving, Uncategorized

Moving is very high on the stress level charts, and with good reason.  Packing up your life and relocating involves making decisions often without the luxury of time to plan and organize.  If relocating in 2018 is in your plans, read our tips below to reduce your stress throughout the entire relocation process.

  1. Start to sort through your belongings as soon as you know you will be moving. Often our belongings migrate around our homes.  Start to return items to the space where they belong.  This makes packing and labeling boxes much easier for the movers. Unpacking is a breeze when the contents of the box belong in the same space.
  2. If items no longer serve your current lifestyle either donate them to charity or sell them online or with an auction house.  Why pay to move items you no longer want? Many charities will come to your home and pick up large items.
  3. Keep a notebook handy for all the documents you will obtain through the relocation process.  Contracts, Realtor business cards, and service providers are just a few of the many pieces of information you will need to keep handy.  You can use clear plastic paper pockets to keep fabric samples and paint colors at your fingertips.
  4. Be ruthless in your kitchen before you pack. Toss expired spices and canned foods, Tupperware without lids, chipped or broken dishes and other items that are in poor shape. As the move date approaches, be sure to throw out any perishable food items. Non-perishable items can be packed and donated to the local foodbank through a program such as Move For Hunger.
  5. Take a good look at the clothing in all your closets. Have you worn it in the past two seasons?  Does it fit?  Do you feel good wearing this item? If you answered “No” to any of these questions, it is time to donate the clothing.

If your move has come up suddenly and you don’t have the time to tackle these projects by yourself there is no need to worry. There are professional companies out there that provide pre-move planning and organizing services. These services can help you reduce costs, save time and reduce stress during the relocation. Your moving company will appreciate the work that has been done and it will help ensure a smooth, hassle-free relocation experience.

Moving is an emotional experience. A transition into a new home can make you and your family happy, sad, and everything in between. You may ready to move in to your next residence, but your children may not share the same enthusiasm.

Your kids aren’t thinking about what’s best for your family down the road or trying to find a local moving company. Your children just know that they’re leaving their home for a strange, new place. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM EVERYONE AT ANDREWS!

Published on Dec 26, 2017 in Andrews Blog: Residential & Corporate Moving Services

Hello and Happy Holidays to you and your families from all of us at Andrews! We hope you have a wonderful holiday week and get to spend time with your loved ones!

Below are some of the highlights at Andrews from this past year …

2017 has been a very eventful year for Andrews. In addition to having a particularly busy move season we have performed some really intricate moves and also picked up an extraordinary amount of home delivery business.

With all of the action going on, it is hard to believe that yet another year has flown by!

Even as residential business slows down, Andrews is involved in other types of work. Staff at our Columbus office participated in the “Adopt-A-Family” Salvation Army drive on Monday, gathering toys and donation items for local families in need. According to Katie, all of the staff pitched in and were able to collect an impressive amount of donations this year for families in Central Ohio. Great job, everyone—what a way to give back to the community!

As moving season starts to dwindle, Andrews employees find the time to enjoy themselves and kick up their heels a little.

Holiday festivities began with setting up and decorating the Christmas trees, both in Streetsboro and in Columbus. While this may sound fun it was more work this year than expected … at least in Streetsboro! Here, Mark experiences the classic frustration of when “one light goes out they all go out” on a particular string of lights.

“One light goes out, they all go out!”

The end result? Both trees in Streetsboro and Columbus look wonderful!

Our tree was not complete without at least ONE custom homemade ornament for Kris, our logistics coordinator, whose favorite holiday of the year is Christmas, by far!

The celebration continued last week when our great friends from CSNS bought a special catered meal for us from D’Angelo’s. To Cindy, Cecelia and everyone at CSNS, thank you so much for your generosity—it is always such a pleasure working with you!

The lasagna dinner was amazing!!

The merriment continued as employees opened presents during the annual secret Santa gift exchange. Andrews’ infamous “white elephant” gifts are always sure to make staff smile. In Streetsboro, some of the more memorable items included a blanket needed for a cold office, homemade sausage rolls and pasta, a bath package and plates.

But the grand daddy white elephant prize had to be a United Van lines debut record from 1981!

Yes, one lucky employee unwrapped the gift of a special 33RPM tribute album to United Van Lines titled, “Nice Going United: Music To Move By,” containing a compilation of the best traveling music from the 1970s! Hits included “On The Road Again,” by Willie Nelson, songs by Englebert Humperdinck and Vic Damone, and a great rip off of “Country Roads Take Me Home,” by Lynn Anderson!! The employee here, who wished to remain anonymous, said she cherished this present so much she would put it under her Christmas tree at home and look at it every day until The Big Morning. She even said she would like to collect copies of this record and did a quick eBay search to find just one other United album currently being auctioned at a whopping $9.99!

The runner up white elephant present went to our beloved dispatcher, Jeff, who was so excited—and a little confused—to unwrap a matching 4-piece set of beautifully decorated gold-plated parrot dinner plates!

This beautiful dinnerware, created by local and mysterious Cleveland artist and known only to the public as “e.e. bird,” was homespun on his (or her?) trusty potter’s wheel in an artist’s loft in the bohemian neighborhood of Ohio City. Having created only a small number of these much sought after, limited-edition plates, Jeff was astounded to unwrap the package, only to see these rare dishes inside!

“I can’t believe it. These are incredible!” exclaimed Jeff, who shook his head in amazement at such a find. “My wife and I have been on the lookout for such a treasure. She’ll be SO surprised when I show her!” When our commercial move coordinator, Katie, saw these special plates she oohed and ahhed over them so much that Jeff became protective and told her to back off. The craftsmanship of the 24-karate gold parrots painted onto a beautiful turquoise background are sure to entice anyone to eat anything off of such a find.

I just hope their cupboards will be able to contain such uniqueness!

What wonders do these packages hold?

I bet this is a good one!

Andrews’ own, Linda Hutchison, volunteers with Greater Dublin Realty Association’s Annual Euchre Tournament!

Andrews believes in supporting our local community as much as we can. That’s why on Sept. 11, 2017, Andrews Moving & Storage sponsored the Greater Dublin Realty Association’s Annual Euchre Tournament at Muirfield Country Club in Dublin, Ohio. The euchre tournament was held during the Greater Dublin Golf Outing that same day. Andrews’ own Residential Sales Consultant in Columbus, Linda Hutchison, played a key role in sponsoring, organizing and volunteering for the event. It was a fun way to earn money to help locally! Money accrued from the event went to assist the Dublin City School District’s Teen Suicide Prevention program in Columbus.

Linda has been involved with the Greater Dublin Realty Association’s annual Euchre Tournament for a few years now, raising awareness of suicide, which is the second leading cause of death for those 15-24 years old, and increasing funding for Dublin City School District’s prevention program. The euchre tournament coincided with National Suicide Prevention Week, which school staff showcased daily to educate the families of students who attend the school. Linda Hutchison has worked at Andrews Moving & Storage for 12 years.

The NE Ohio Cares Supply Drive September – A Huge Success!

THE NEO CARES HURRICANE RELIEF SUPPLY DRIVE – A HUGE SUCCESS!

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, Andrews Moving & Storage, local agent for United Van Lines, partnered with WKYC Channel 3 of Tegra Media, Q104, The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland and Pilot Flying J and hosted the “Northeast Ohio Cares Hurricane Relief Supply Drive” for those effected by the storms in Texas and Florida.

Andrews Moving & Storage was one agent among 13 different markets to participate in the drive. Between all the markets a total of 16 trailers were filled with goods which equaled approximately 350,000 pounds of supplies. Now that’s a lot of donations!!

Thanks to the generous support of everyone who donated, our company alone was able to completely fill one 53-ft trailer full of supplies to be shipped to children, families and communities in need. To give you an idea of how much that is, a 53-ft trailer is typically used in transporting one family’s entire household belongings during a residential move. When the fully-loaded truck was weighed for transportation purposes, the donations themselves equaled 20,000 pounds!

Andrews collected a total of 350 boxes of supplies and 720 cases of bottled water. The most heavily donated goods included bottled water, paper towels, canned goods, soap and diapers. Monetary donations were taken as well.

Four collection sites were set up around Greater Cleveland which included the main site at the Channel 3 television studio in downtown Cleveland, and three locations at area Walmart stores in North Olmsted, Aurora and Fairlawn.

Channel 3 broadcasted live segments throughout the day on the news and Live on Lakeside to promote awareness and show progress with the drive. Below are video clips of some of the segments. In the first segment, WKYC reporter, Eric Sever, interviews Andrews’ own long-time employee and driver, Tim O’Connor on the part Andrews played in the collection process. (Good job, Tim—here’s one for the family video library!).

Seeing so many people reaching out to help their fellow citizens was very heartwarming. Items on the donation list were depleted from Walmart shelves as concerned shoppers readily gave to help. At all locations, people unloaded trunks and shopping carts filled to the brim with donations to assist others in need. A local Aurora Walmart shopper said her brother and his family were flooded out of their home in Florida a couple of years ago and donated 10 cases of bottled water. Another story came from a generous North Olmsted contributor who said he just wanted to pay it forward to help those effected as he would want the same in such a situation. Yet another charitable lady in Fairlawn who worked at a retirement home donated a van full of surplus retirement supplies hoping they could go to another continuing care facility.

In addition to these wonderful contributions, several community groups that had conducted their own donation drives stopped in to give them to us to transport. Staff at Streetsboro City Schools came by in a bus and unloaded their items for us to take.

Donations were delivered later that week to Houston, Texas and Tampa and Ocala, Florida. Pilot Flying J Headquarters donated the fuel it took for our drivers to transport the items to their destinations.

“To be able to help those devastated by Harvey and Irma with the use of our transportation resources and expertise is an honor,” says Andrews Moving and Storage President, Chris Palange. “We all witnessed the destruction caused by the storms and we are excited to help play a role in transporting the generosity of Northeast Ohioans to those in need in Houston!”

WKYC General Manager, Micki Burns, adds, “The support for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts from Northeast Ohio has been overwhelmingly positive. We are now proud to partner with Andrews Moving and Storage, The Salvation Army, United Van Lines, Pilot Flying J and Q104 as we continue to serve the greater good.”

Pilot Flying J will be donating the fuel needed for trucks to deliver items to those in need. Director of Giving Back for Pilot Flying J, Will Haslam notes, “Fueling the trucks journey to deliver supplies to Houston is a privilege. With travel centers in Southeast Texas, Houston is among the hometowns where our guests and team members live and work. We are honored to help by partnering with everyone as well.”

To everyone who contributed to this event, whether through donations or volunteering time and effort, thank you so much from everyone here at Andrews! THE DRIVE WAS A SUCCESS BECAUSE OF YOU AND WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP!

FROM ALL THOSE IN NEED IN TEXAS AND FLORIDA AS WELL AS FROM ALL OF US AND OUR PARTNERS, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!!!
