Four Tips for Stress-free Moving During Winter

Moving in the snow may not be preferable, but that shouldn’t stop you from going with your dream home. Here are four tips to follow during your winter move so that you don’t get left out in the cold.

Residential moving tips for winter

Utilize the Utilities

This point goes for all moves, but it’s really important when it’s cold outside. Make sure that all you’re your utilities are up and running in time for your move-in day. No utilities will not only make for an unpleasant, freezing moving experience, but also an unfortunate first few days in your new residence. Plus, you really don’t want to be the person to get the cold shoulder from everyone because you forgot about the heat.

Stay Warm

Getting your utilities turned on is a start, but there are a few more things to do to stay warm. Dress in layers during your move. This will keep you nice and toasty when you’re outside and will allow you to shed a few layers when you move inside. Also, prepare some hot beverages that you can sip on throughout the move. This will help keep you warm and make both you and the movers happy.

Make a Path

Don’t trek through snow throughout your move. You’ll want to shovel a path for when you move out of your old house and one for moving into your new house. Don’t skimp on the path either; you’ll want it to be big enough that multiple people can walk through.

In addition to a walkway, you’ll need to clear out space for parking. A moving truck will require a lot of room, so make sure there’s enough space cleared in the driveway. Also, slipping is bad, especially when you’re carrying valuable possessions. Clear out ice and throw some salt down to help with traction.

Plan Ahead and Keep an Emergency Kit Ready

It’s better to have something and not use it than need it and not have it. Nobody wants to use an emergency kit, but on the offhand that a winter storm picks up or something happens to your car on the way to your new house, you really don’t want to be stuck without some supplies during the middle of winter. Be prepared by packing some blankets, a flashlight, and other emergency items just in case!
