The Complete Moving Checklist: Protect Your Move
Phase 1: Before the Move
- Get the Official Guides: Obtain the Ready to Move brochure and the Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move booklet from your mover. These are your primary resources for understanding your legal protections.
- Verify Credentials: Ensure your mover is registered with the FMCSA and has a valid USDOT number. You can verify this using the FMCSA Registered Mover Database.
- Vet the Company: Research the mover’s reputation through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and check recent customer reviews.
- Understand Liability: Clearly define the mover’s responsibility for damages. Ask for a detailed explanation of the difference between "valuation" and "actual insurance."
- Confirm Logistics: Establish how and when your household goods will be picked up and delivered. Confirm contact protocols for before, during, and after the move.
- Secure Your Assets: Adequately insure your belongings. Never sign documents without reading the fine print regarding insurance coverage and claims processes.
Phase 2: Moving Day
- Be Present: You must be present to provide directions and answer questions. Stay on-site until the crew completes their work.
- Supervise the Inventory: Accompany the movers as they inventory your goods. Resolve any questions regarding the condition of items before they are loaded.
- Document Everything: Read the Estimate, Order for Service, Bill of Lading, and Inventory List carefully. Never sign blank documents.
- Maintain Records: Keep your signed copy of the Bill of Lading until your goods are delivered, charges are paid, and any claims are settled.
- Final Walkthrough: Perform a final inspection of your home to ensure nothing is left behind or damaged.

Phase 3: Delivery Day
- Be Available: Remain present to oversee the unloading process.
- Payment & Inspection: Pay the driver according to your agreement before unloading begins (if required by your terms).
- Verify Condition: Supervise the unloading and unpacking. Note any damage on the inventory list before signing any delivery documents.
- Report Issues: If items are damaged or missing, request a formal claim form from the mover immediately. Remember: you have 9 months from the date of delivery to file a written claim.
