So, You Think PODS is Cheaper? Hire Professional Movers

There comes a time when being close to family becomes important, and I’ve reached that time. After being in Phoenix for 22 years, my daughter made it very clear she wanted me home and closer to her and family. Hmmm, weather in Phoenix vs. Cleveland – tough decision, but in the end, family trumps weather! 

OK, decision made and now for doing it. Most of my other moves have been corporate but this one was on me. I had seen the commercials for PODS and it sounded like a less expensive alternative to a full service moving company like United Van Lines (I’ll explain why I reference them later).

Online is great and I filled out the form on the PODS website and got a quote. It was a bit more than I expected, but that was only my expectation as I didn’t have any actual experience with moving costs – thank you IBM, etc. With all costs were totaled up, it came to $5,267. Yikes!

Well, in fact it wasn’t all costs as I’m an old guy now and would need to hire help to load and unload the container. Not sure how much, but that would be an extra cost.

Now back to United Van Lines. I grew up in Cleveland and went to Miami University (Ohio) and roomed with Tom Marshall, who’s dad was President of Andrews Moving and Storage, a United Van Lines franchise. Tom joined Andrews and has since retired but even so, I figured that was a good place to start. So, I called Andrews and connected with Donala Anderson, Residential Sales. She asked a few questions and requested a list of furniture which I sent the following day.

I waited a few days thinking that their quote would be much higher than PODS as it was a 2,000-mile move (actually 1997 miles). To my shock and pleasant surprise, it was $5,610 – just a few hundred more than PODS, and that was without the labor cost to load and unload.

Decision made and the move scheduled with Andrews for September 23, 2023. The bonus of this decision was Ken, the United driver, as he was great and went beyond the call-of-duty to help me pack some oversized pictures. The delivery was on time and went great as now I had family to help me unpack. Donala kept me informed and gets an A+ from me for great customer service.

So, if you think PODS is cheaper – call Andrews.
